Ambu SPUR II Paediatric is a disposable resuscitator designed for manual ventilation of children and infants, with a built-in pressure-limiting valve that prevents barotrauma and two masks (sizes 0 and 1) in each pack.

The pressure-limiting valve activates automatically at 40 cmH₂O, meaning that even forceful compression of the bag cannot exceed this pressure. It is a safety relief valve — during normal ventilation, inspiratory pressure in children is 15–20 cmH₂O, but in a stressful situation the caregiver may unknowingly ventilate more forcefully than intended. Children's airways are more sensitive to excess pressure than those of adults, and ventilation at excessive pressure can cause gastric insufflation, pneumothorax or lung injury. The pressure-limiting valve is not included on the adult version of SPUR II.

The bag is made from silicone with low mechanical resistance — this means that each compression delivers air immediately without a “sponge effect”. Its flexibility and built-in handle allow ventilation to be maintained for longer without muscle fatigue, which is particularly relevant when paediatric CPR (HLR) situations can last for 20–30 minutes or more. The transparent valve provides immediate visual feedback on whether the valve is functioning correctly and whether the mask seals properly — if there is a leak, the user can see that the valve does not close completely between breaths.

Why choose SPUR II Paediatric rather than a reusable resuscitator?

Disposable resuscitators eliminate the risk of cross-contamination between individuals, which is particularly relevant in pre-hospital use where cleaning and disinfection cannot always be carried out immediately after a response. Having two masks (sizes 0 and 1) in each pack means that ambulance personnel or an emergency team have the correct size immediately available without needing to open several packs or choose between separate sizes in a time-critical situation. SPUR II weighs 80 grams — significantly less than reusable resuscitators such as Laerdal or HSE, which often weigh 200–300 grams.

Size 0 fits newborns and infants up to approximately 5 kg, while size 1 fits small children up to approximately 10 kg. For children over 10 kg, use Ambu SPUR II Junior (with size 2 mask). The bag is supplied in sterile packaging and is intended for use on one individual on one occasion — it must be discarded after use, regardless of whether it was used for a few seconds or several minutes. The product is CE marked and complies with ISO 10651 for manual resuscitators.
