AuraOnce laryngeal mask size 5

AuraOnce laryngeal mask size 5 is Ambu's single-use solution for adults and is used to secure the airway during anaesthesia, unconsciousness or pre-hospital ventilation — one of the few laryngeal masks with an anatomically pre-curved shape that reduces the risk of incorrect rotation during insertion.

The anatomical pre-curve allows the mask to follow the natural curve of the airway from the roof of the mouth down to the epiglottis. This allows the head to remain in a neutral position during ventilation, without overextension or pronounced flexion — an advantage when cervical injury is suspected or under difficult intubation conditions where time is critical. The tip is reinforced with additional material to prevent the cuff from folding back during insertion, a common complication with first-generation laryngeal masks.

The cuff and airway tube are moulded as a single unit, eliminating the risk of components separating during ventilation or transport. The cuff volume is dimensioned to create a reliable seal against the hypopharynx without requiring high cuff pressure — thereby reducing mucosal injury and postoperative sore throat compared with the high-volume seals of older models.

Compared with reusable laryngeal masks such as LMA Classic, AuraOnce eliminates the risk of cross-infection and the need for cleaning, autoclaving and inspections between uses. The entire process from unpacking to insertion takes less than 30 seconds. In pre-hospital applications where several individuals are treated during a working day, the single-use version provides guaranteed sterility and correct function every time. Size 5 is the largest size in the AuraOnce range and fits adults with a body weight above approximately 70 kg. Sizes 3 and 4 are available for children or smaller adults.

The laryngeal mask is used at stage C of L-ABCDE when the individual has a reduced level of consciousness but still has intact protective reflexes, or when endotracheal intubation is not possible or indicated. AuraOnce is supplied in packs of 10 pieces for clinic and ambulance stocks.
